Udaipur’s celebrations are recognized as one of a kind, offering truly memorable experiences for both travelers and natives. The beginning of the important, colourful festivals starts with the Mewar Festival held in March or April each year. This festival is an introduction to the spring city, allowing the city to light up with joyful dances, musical performances, and decorations and streamers placed everywhere. Idols are specifically decorated, and when the masterpieces are complete, they are set off into the river in boats for everyone to see. The Mewar Festival is sometimes overlapped with the also vibrant Gangaur Festival, presented for 18 days in honour of Goddess Parvati. Processions are held, and cultural and folk performances are non-stop, delighting the awed and excited tourists. One of the biggest events in Udaipur is the annual Shilpgram Crafts Fair. During this “Craftsmen’s Village,” Udaipur is surrounded with delightful sights of stalls, bazaars and mini-markets with some of India’s most renowned designers and talented artists offering their unique, original handicrafts. This is a great time of the year to visit, in order to bring home some of the most diverse, creative pieces you can find in all of India – as well as being given the honour to meet the people involved in making it all possible!
